How do I salvage the hard drive from my defunct computer to make an external hard drive?

My old Mac died but all of my "stuff" is still in that computer. My computer guru suggested pulling out the hard drive and turning it into an external unit...how do I do that and what do I put it in??? Is there some sort of unit that it fits in to to protect it?
