Hi Campby, so you are losing one of your oldest friends, and I guess both of you can see that, so you do what you should do, and that is lose your oldest friend in the easiest way possible. So I would answer your question by telling you that it would be best just to drift apart. You're going that way anyway so why should you make it so abrupt. You never end it with an old friend, in your case you just let it drift. That's the way friends should act. I wish you happiness.
